It's Kai writing this blog, the director behind Schism. Two weeks remain until we launch our Demo for Schism on August 28th, at 13:00 EDT (1 PM)! With two levels and three dialogue sequences starting the conflict between the Church of the Thousand Eyes and The Order of Antlers.

You may be asking yourself, "Wasn't it August 21st?" and you would be correct. Yesterday, we had to make the tough call to push it back a week because our game failed the Steam Review due to us not including packages necessary to actually play the game. But worry not, our demo has been submitted and should be ready to play by the 28th. When that happens, we'll let you know, better yet, why don't you go ahead and wishlist our game on Steam to be notified then?

In the meantime, let's look ahead to the future with what we are planning to do next for Schism:

Features that we're developing:

A diary to help you recall your decisions that you made when writing your report while keeping track of the narrative you craft in Schism. Our game is complex in the fact that there is a lot of information. We've heard that a diary like this would be greatly helpful, so we're beginning to work on it!

WIP, we have the underlying structure completed right now.
WIP, we have the underlying structure completed right now.

We're working on dialogue events for audio cues, scenery changes, and visual cues to further immerse you in the tense scenes unfolding before you. Along with visual effects in the backgrounds of dialogue sections including dust, light, and more to further immerse you in the world of Cervinae. Here's a mockup for what we intend to do:

  • Controller support for the game so that you can play Schism with a nice cup of tea, snuggled next to a source of warmth for those rainy days that come in the fall.

  • Fully rendering out the cutscenes of the game with complete animations.

  • The feedback that you will give us from our demo!

  • Act II content.

For Act II content, we’ve actually plotted out the story, and we’re currently beginning to write the script. Here’s a teaser of one of the characters who will appear in Act II as the schism unfolds…

If you want to check out our development journey and chat with us directly, join our Discord server! We drop exclusive lore and content there on the server!

Potential Linux and Mac Support

One of the most interesting things that we will be exploring in the near future is getting the game to Mac and potentially Linux. We know there are a few amount of people who want to play our game. I'm about to get pretty technical here, if you understand it, come swing on by on our Discord and let me know what you think!

We’re currently exploring how to package our game on Mac machines and Linux but it's not so simple due to our tools suite. We use Perforce source control, Unreal Engine, and SteamPipe so the content building and distribution pipeline isn't as open source and easy to use as say, Github + Game CI/CD is. We're researching and working on solution right now, but it remains not the hugest priority for us right now as compared to above. There is more information on that coming soon.

Okay, technical chatting is over. If you want more of that, let me know! I always love talking the ins and outs of gamedev myself!

Regardless, those are our steps for the near future! We can’t wait for you to play through the first act of Schism and finally get your hands (or should we say hooves?) on our beloved game. We can’t wait for all of the feedback that you’ll give us, and taking it towards developing a much better game.

Next week, we’ll be showing you how you can do that and how you will be in the credits of our game! What are you most excited for?

Until then,

Kai, Director of Schism
